Scholar Development Workshops

The ACE Scholars Program offers Scholar Development Workshops to support students with a broad range of postgraduate goals, including increasing competitiveness for merit awards, fellowships, and graduate/professional schools. ACE works closely with a wide range of offices for sharing information, including the Bunche Center’s HU Bison Abroad Office, the Center for Career and Professional Success, and the Center for Preprofessional Education.

ACE offers information sessions and workshops throughout the year to promote awareness and preparation for prestigious national scholarships and merit awards.

These information sessions are as follows:

Introduction to Scholar Development (Second Year Students)
Scholar Enrichment Institute (Third and Fourth Year Students)
Fulbright Basics (Third Year Students)

This session will provide an overview of national and international merit award opportunities available for Howard University students. This workshop will focus on how to envision and design an undergraduate experience that will provide a strong foundation for building a purpose-driven career with an outward focus on using your scholarly talents and gifts for the greater good. Topics of discussion will include exploring Howard opportunities for study abroad, community service, leadership development, internships, domestic exchange and undergraduate research.

Third and Fourth Year students who maintain at least a 3.7 GPA are invited to engage in an intensive exploration of several merit-based awards that are due in the Fall semester of the senior year. Students may apply for awards as seniors or alumni following graduation. Weekly meetings are all optional and will explore building a strong application for multiple fellowships, including the Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, Gates-Cambridge, Schwarzman, Knight-Hennessey and other scholarships. Program representatives, local DC-Area Scholars and Howard alumni are normally invited to discuss award requirements and a broad range of issues related to leadership, scholarship and service. Dinner is normally provided for evening meetings. Participation in SEI is not required for university endorsement, and applying for awards is not required after participation in SEI.

The U.S. State Department provides funding for recent college graduates to teach, research, or pursue graduate studies abroad. The Fulbright Basics meeting is required for all Howard University students seeking a Campus Committee Evaluation (CCE) for the U.S. Fulbright Student Program application due every October.
